01Summary

AISummary by Kvorumclaude-haiku-4-5

This AIP authorizes the Guardian multisig to hold emergency keys for all Aave Protocol V2 deployments, allowing them to pause the protocol in case of exploits or emergencies, similar to their current admin key role for new protocol deployments.

Type
governance change

Key changes

  • Guardian multisig (0xCA76Ebd8617a03126B6FB84F9b1c1A0fB71C2633) authorized as emergency admin for Aave Protocol V2, enabling pause functionality(high)

Notable concerns

  • Centralizes emergency control in a multisig that operates independently from full governance
  • Requires rapid decision-making during emergencies may bypass standard governance processes

Abstract

This Aave Improvement Proposal (AIP) is to authorize the Guardian to hold the emergency keys for V2 of the Aave Protocol, just as the Guardian holds the keys for new deployments of the Aave Protocol. These keys will allow the Guardian to pause the protocol in case of an unforeseen event, such as an exploit or other emergency.

The Guardian – a community multisig comprised of elected, reputable members of the Aave community – was established to protect the Aave Protocol in a number of ways, including against potential governance takeovers by centralized actors. Recently, the Aave community voted in favor of the Guardian holding the admin keys for new deployments of the Aave Protocol on different networks such as Avalanche.

Consistent with its purpose to protect the Aave Protocol, the Guardian should hold the emergency keys for all deployments of the Aave Protocol in order to ensure security and safety for the Aave ecosystem. This will allow a more rapid response in the event of an exploit or emergency. As you know, the Guardians were a community-elected set of DeFi participants, builders, and capital allocators (see here for more info). These individuals are active contributors in the space, and are prepared to act at a moment’s notice to help the community and ecosystem mitigate risk.

Although Aave Governance makes all decisions regarding the Aave Protocol, the need to act quickly in the case of an unanticipated event points to having the Guardian – a smaller DAO / multisig of ten – hold the emergency keys in order to be able protect the Aave Protocol and its users.

To protect the Aave Protocol from malicious actors, this AIP sets forth a proposal to authorize the Community Guardian to hold the emergency keys for all deployments of the Aave Protocol.

03Mismatch analysis

AIMismatch analysis by Kvorummedium confidenceclaude-sonnet-5
Consistent

The proposal's stated purpose is a single, clear action: grant the Guardian multisig the emergency admin role on Aave V2 so it can pause the protocol in an emergency. The decoded calldata contains exactly one action, calling setEmergencyAdmin(address) on what appears to be the V2 LendingPoolAddressesProvider, setting the emergency admin to a specific address. This matches the described action in both function (granting emergency pause authority) and scope (one deployment, V2). There are no numeric parameters to compare, no additional actions bundled in, and no funds transferred or unrelated roles granted. The only uncertainty is that the description does not explicitly name the target contract address or confirm that 0xCA76...2633 is indeed the Guardian multisig — this can't be independently verified from the text alone, so confidence is medium rather than high. However, this is a reasonable and expected gap for a governance proposal of this type (specific addresses are typically documented off-chain or in linked forums), not a material discrepancy. No value, target, or scope mismatches are evident from the available information.
