Aave v3 Polygon wMATIC Interest Rate Update
01Summary
Llama proposes to amend wMATIC interest rate parameters, SupplyCap, and BorrowCap on Aave Polygon v3 to reduce borrowing costs, improve capital efficiency, and prepare for an upcoming liquidity mining campaign. Changes include increasing Uoptimal from 45% to 75%, reducing Slope1 from 7.0% to 6.1%, reducing Slope2 from 300% to 100%, increasing SupplyCap from 32.88M to 47M, and increasing BorrowCap from 9.23M to 39.95M.

- parameter change
Key changes
- Increase Uoptimal from 45% to 75% to enable users to borrow 30% more wMATIC at the same borrowing rate(high)
- Reduce Slope1 from 7.0% to 6.1% to lower borrowing cost at the Uoptimal point(high)
- Reduce Slope2 from 300% to 100% to lower borrowing cost volatility when utilisation exceeds Uoptimal(medium)
- Increase SupplyCap from 32.88M to 47M to enable recursive yield strategies to grow during liquidity mining(high)
- Increase BorrowCap from 9.23M to 39.95M to support expanded borrowing capacity(high)
Notable concerns
- Reduced borrowing costs and increased caps may increase protocol risk exposure to wMATIC
- Proposal is the first of future optimization iterations, suggesting ongoing changes may be necessary

02Description
Summary
Llama presents a proposal to amend the interest rate parameters, SupplyCap, and BorrowCap for wMATIC on the Aave Polygon v3 Liquidity Pool.
Abstract
At the current borrowing rate of 6.11%, the maximised yield strategy of looping stMATIC/wMATIC is non profitable without incentives. wMATIC’s reserve utilisation is low, 38.15%, due to high borrowing costs.
This proposal will reduce the borrowing cost of wMATIC by reducing the overall borrowing cost to users and will also improve capital efficiency by enabling a great portion of the liquidity to be borrowed. This is expected to lead to increased wMATIC demand and greater revenue to Aave.
The up and coming liquidity mining campaign is expected to lead to a material inflow of deposits and an increase in borrowing demand. This proposal, amongst others, helps prepare Aave for an influx of new users.
Motivation
With wMATIC borrowing costs exceeding the yield of MaticX and stMATIC, users are unlikely to enter into the Matic eMode without financial incentive. Upon review of the wMATIC reserve, the Uoptimal parameter set at 45% means users can borrow up to 45% of the wMATIC in the reserve before borrowing costs become more volatile.
Increasing the Uoptimal parameter from 45% to 75% will enable users to borrow 30% more wMATIC in the reserve for the same borrowing rate, Slope1. By reducing the Slope1 parameter from 7.0% to 6.1%, the borrowing cost at the Uoptimal point is lowered.
To reduce the volatility in the borrow rate above Uoptimal utilisation, this proposal intends to reduce the Slope2 parameter from 300% to 100%. This will lower the borrowing cost volatility when utilisation exceeds the Upotimal point.
This initial update of increasing the Uoptimal and lowering the Slope1 parameter improves the overall capital efficiency and makes borrowing more attractive to users. Future updates will further optimise the interest rate.
The graphic below shows the changes in the interest rate.

In addition to the interest rate updates proposed above, Chaos Labs has provided revised SupplyCap and BorrowCap parameters. By increasing the amount of wMATIC that can be deposited and borrowed, the recursive yield maximising strategy can grow beyond the current limitation of the reserve during the upcoming liquidity mining program.

03Mismatch analysis
The proposal uses the standard Aave governance pattern: a single on-chain action that calls execute(address) on the governance executor, delegatecalling into a separately deployed 'payload' contract that contains the actual logic for updating the wMATIC interest rate strategy, SupplyCap, and BorrowCap. The decoded calldata's target argument (0x7255791F9B2D44863C21Ed1f484d444A74731aC6) exactly matches the 'Proposal Payload deployed address' disclosed in the description's Implementation section, and the description also links to the payload source code and a new Interest Rate Strategy deployment script, which is consistent with the specification table's changes (Uoptimal 45%->75%, Slope1 7.0%->6.1%, Slope2 300%->100%, SupplyCap 32.88M->47M, BorrowCap 9.23M->39.95M). Because the actual parameter values are embedded inside the external payload contract's bytecode rather than being visible in the decoded top-level calldata, I cannot independently verify each numeric parameter against the on-chain payload from the calldata alone. However, the target address match and the standard, well-documented Aave AIP execution pattern give no indication of a target or value mismatch. Given the address correspondence and typical governance structure, I assess this as consistent, but with medium confidence since full verification of the payload's internal logic (the specific numbers) is not possible from the single decoded action provided.

- [ARFC] Aave v3 Polygon wMATIC Interest Rate Update ↗discourse · medium confidence
Arguments for
- Increasing Uoptimal and adjusting Slope1/Slope2 improves capital efficiency, raises pool utilization, lowers borrowing costs, and increases DAO revenue.— Llamaxyz, MatthewGraham
- The changes reestablish economic incentive for borrowing wMATIC and using MATIC eMode, which benefits DAO revenue.— fig, MarcZeller
- Supply cap should be raised to accommodate expected liquidity mining inflows and migration of wMATIC liquidity from v2 to v3.— Llamaxyz, sakulstra
- The ACI reviewed and fully supported the proposal, casting an on-chain YAE vote.— MarcZeller
Arguments against
- Gauntlet warned that setting the interest rate at the optimal point below current stMATIC APR could push utilization above optimal, causing volatile interest rates and risk of failed atomic liquidations, recommending a higher Slope1 of 6.5%.— Pauljlei
Unresolved concerns
- Discrepancy between stMATIC/MaticX yield figures across Lido, Stader, and Polygon Foundation front-ends made it unclear whether the chosen Slope1 (6.1%) adequately kept utilization below the risky inflection point, and Gauntlet's suggested 6.5% alternative was not explicitly adopted or rebutted.— Pauljlei, Llamaxyz
- Extended delays waiting on Chaos Labs' cap analysis raised concerns about the proposal's ability to be finalized before the on-chain vote deadline.— lbsblockchain, Llamaxyz
Notable participants
- LlamaxyzProposal author who iterated on parameters, responded to feedback, and coordinated with Gauntlet, Chaos Labs, and BGD Labs throughout the process.
- MatthewGrahamCo-author of the original proposal.
- MarcZellerEarly supporter who pushed for escalation to Snapshot and later confirmed ACI's on-chain YAE vote.
- figExpressed support for the incentive redesign and favored moving quickly to Snapshot.
